about

Wolf’s Tail was commissioned by Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2019. It is for solo performer with four turntables.
The work explores the, then, imminent 2019 General Election and the learning of man through mythology and ‘magic’ found in nature.
In Sufi mythology, ‘dawns left hand’ is defined as the perennial wisdom and the first yearning to solve the riddles of life, a shooting light at the break of dawn. In science, 'wolf’s tail' is defined as the first beam of light to break the sky at dawn on Earth. We find that 'magic' can be explained through error propagation – where an error in regular patterns results in a new development. We find self-regeneration on earth in the self-healing nature of echinoderms ( e.g. starfish and sea cucumbers). Error propagation is interpreted within the musical form of this work as the improvisation in the third section, a 4-turntable beatjuggle.

The opening section of the work is a solo, composed for the Vestax Controller One turntable. This turntable has an ultra pitch function of 120%, where up to two octaves of pitches can be played.

Influenced by ideas in musique concrete, the second section reworks speech from Margaret Thatcher and Mhairi Black.

The third section of the work borrows ideas of looping and phasing from Steve Reich’s phasing techniques, adapted to four turntables.

The fourth section focused on sirens. The saxophones were layered over four-turntables and play with jarring dissonances.
